“We are the living links in a life force that moves and plays around and through us, binding the deepest soils with the farthest stars.”

 The Root Chakra Influence

THE FOUNDATION

“All things must come to the soul from its roots, from where it is planted” ~ Saint Teresa of Avila

The base chakra affects every aspect of our life and addresses the foundation of our entire being. It is located at the base of the spine, near the genitalia, and energetically connects us to mother earth, or Gaia. Muladhara is the Sanskrit word for this chakra which translates to mean ‘root’ or ‘support.’

Like the foundation of a house, any misalignments in the root chakra can cause imbalances in the higher chakras. If our ‘home’ is built on a faulty foundation, those misalignments will become more and more exaggerated as we build upwards. The more imbalances we have in our foundation, the more we have to compensate as we move up the chakra system.

This is why people who grow up in unstable home environments often struggle emotionally because they have no emotional grounding so there will be no strong root system to keep them anchored deep within their bodies during times of stress. As our energies rise to the higher chakras, these imbalances may be expressed as emotional instability instead of remaining centred and balanced in our body. The more misalignments we have in our lower chakras, the more exhausted and unstable our energy system will become as a whole. Conversely, the healthier our base chakra, the more balanced our entire system will be, and the easier life will feel.

A Road Map to Home

A healthy root chakra helps us absorb the knowledge of why we are here and what our true purpose is. Therefore, this chakra has a unique gift because it holds information from many lifetimes and guides us towards our destiny. (Author unknown) Since our true life purpose was decided before we were even born, it’s the base chakra that is responsible for helping keep us grounded on our path.

Business & Life Review – Get out your journal!

Are you living a life of purpose?

We all have a unique life purpose for which we are the sole key holders. If you are unsure of what your life purpose is, ask yourself this question: What have you been through in your life that uniquely positions you to help others? The answer to that question can guide you. What matters most is to be moved, to love what you do and to be of service.

At this stage in your life do you know what your true life purpose is? And are you honouring it? If not, what is getting in your way? Life circumstances? Finances? Fear? Lack of Confidence? What would your life look like if you stepped onto the path of your true life purpose? What would need to change in your life?

We invite you to journal on this subject and explore your relationship with your true life purpose. At this point, it’s okay to not have the answers or to feel like your purpose seems impossible to honour. Wherever you are, is okay.

Yoga Postures to open the Root Chakra

We invite you to repeat your favourite root chakra affirmation while holding the following yoga poses. Doing so will create a strong connection between your body and mind. Repeat the affirmations out loud or quietly to yourself while holding the postures.

Bridge Pose: Lie supine on the floor, and if necessary, place a thickly folded blanket under your shoulders to protect your neck. Bend your knees and set your feet on the floor, heels as close to the sitting bones as possible.

Exhale and, pressing your inner feet and arms actively into the floor, push your tailbone upward, firming (but not hardening) the buttocks, and lift the buttocks off the floor. Keep your thighs and inner feet parallel. Clasp the hands below your pelvis and extend through the arms to help you stay on the tops of your shoulders.

Lift your buttocks until the thighs are about parallel to the floor. Keep your knees directly over the heels, but push them forward, away from the hips, and lengthen the tailbone toward the backs of the knees.

Butterfly Pose: Sit down on the floor or ground with your legs in front of you. Reach forward and grab your right foot. It is OK to bend your knee to help your hand and foot connect. Gently pull your right foot up towards your groin bending until it is at a comfortable spot and the sole of the foot is facing your left thigh. Bend your left knee to bring your left foot toward your groin so that its sole touches the sole of your right foot.

Hold your feet with your hands and rest your elbows on your knees.

While keeping your back straight (no slouching), allow your knees to fall towards the ground. You can apply gentle pressure on the inner thigh by pressing gently on the knees with the elbows. You should feel gentle pulling and tension in the groin.

Hold the stretch for 20 to 30 seconds.

After you have completed the poses, practice being still by going into quiet mind. This is a time to let your mind be open to transformation. Any time your mind starts to wander, just simply bring it back by saying one of the affirmations above again, then return your awareness to quiet mind. After a few minutes of quiet mind, you may slowly bring your attention back to your surroundings and prepare to move on to the next chapter.
